City street counts of rough sleepers have been conducted regularly in the three capital cities: Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide. The local councils of Sydney and Melbourne, and the Government of South Australia, respectively, have undertaken these surveys.
It is important to note that the three city street counts are based on different methodologies, scope and area coverage. As a result, the counts may not be directly comparable between cities and may not be in line with other research findings for rough sleepers.
Furthermore, a number of factors can affect the city street counts. These include: resources spent on each count, time taken to conduct the count, the number of volunteers used, the frequency of the counts, the weather on the day and the time of the year the count was carried out.
