Rent Assistance

Commonwealth Rent Assistance

Rent Assistance is fully funded by the Commonwealth and provides rental assistance to low-income households and individuals in the private and community housing rental market.

Assistance is in the form of a non-taxable income supplement payable to eligible Australian residents who receive a social security income support payment, or more than the base rate of Family Tax Benefit A or service pension.

More than 1.1 million low-income renters received rent assistance payments totalling $2.9 billion during 2009-10.
